Marathon takes great pride in the quality and experience of its employees and we are always looking to channel that expertise in a way that helps the consumer. Our adjustors are one group of employees who provided feedback about how they encounter the same issues while handling claim calls — small issues that for whatever reason were allowed to become big issues. To that end, we created this page as a way for our adjustors to share their "tip of the month".

How to keep your engine from overheating
How many times have you been driving and seen someone pulled to the side of the road, car hood up, steam billowing from their engine, waiting for a tow truck? Odds are it is a case of engine overheating which makes us get hot just thinking about how preventable it is! Here are 4 easy tips that can help prevent engine overheating:

  1. Check that your car's fluid levels are at the correct levels. Too little engine coolant, for example, will lead to the car overheating faster than normal. Check your radiator and its hoses to ensure everything is set up and working correctly. Also check your oil at this point too. Make sure you have enough and that it is the right viscosity (thickness).

  2. Take your car in for routine service and maintenance checks. The fluids may be low because of a leak you were unaware of. These checks highlight such issues and fix them before they become a bigger problem. The mechanic will also inspect the car's temperature gauge to make sure it's working right.

  3. Keep your eye on the temperature gauge. This will be the first sign (and the easiest to see) that the engine is overheating. If the needle starts inching towards that red, turn your heater on full blast. Doing this will pull the heat from the engine. You might want to crack a window or two while doing this.

  4. Avoid over-using the air conditioner. Blasting it on max for extended periods of time can lead to overheating the car. Instead, run the air on high for only a few minutes and then bring it back down once you're comfortable.

Hopefully these tips help your vehicle and you keep your cool. When in doubt, check out your vehicle's owner manual which has recommendations specific to your vehicle.
